New UK and European Travel Requirements for U.S. Travelers

As international travel protocols continue to evolve, students planning to study or travel abroad should be aware of new travel registration systems being introduced by both the United Kingdom and the European Union.

While these requirements are not visas, they are mandatory pre-travel authorizations that must be completed prior to departure. These updates mirror the U.S. system, which already requires similar authorizations from incoming international travelers.

What You Need to Know

United Kingdom – Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Effective January 8, 2025, most travelers to the U.K., including U.S. citizens, must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival.

  • Apply via the or the UK ETA app
  • Required even if you do not need a visa
  • The ETA is digitally linked to your passport and is typically valid for multiple short stays

European Union – European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)

Expected to launch in late 2026, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a pre-travel authorization system, similar to the U.K. ETA.
  • Will be required for U.S. travelers entering countries in the Schengen Area
  • Check the for up-to-date implementation timelines and information

Why This Matters

Both the U.K. ETA and EU ETIAS are designed to pre-screen travelers and streamline border entry. While these are not difficult to complete, failure to register could result in denied boarding or entry, so plan ahead.
